Pop & Bang

LET POPS AND BANGS MAKE YOUR EXHAUST SOUND BETTER

Would you like some healthy adrenaline rush and some extra heads turning when you drive by? Then pops and bangs tuning is the best solution for you. Find out everything you want to know about this incredible tuning, from how it is done and why to all the benefits and potential risks. Match safety with style to improve your experience behind the wheel.

How? Thanks to the popping and gurgling sounds that the exhaust makes when you shift gears or let off the throttle pedal after hard acceleration. You might have heard the effects of pop & bang tuning on some of the most revered supercars on the planet – now it’s your turn!

Up until recently, this feature was reserved for high-end performance cars. However, our engineers have developed tuning files that bring pop & bang tuning to the vast majority of cars, including many diesels. We pride ourselves on safety and quality so, even though you can enjoy the exhaust crackle, we also let you enjoy it safely.

NOTE: Pop & bang is the most common term used for this amazing feature, but you may have heard about it through one of these terms: deceleration map, crackle map, anti-lag system, popcorn, exhaust crackle, pop on overrun, exhaust overrun and in some countries schubblubbern or schubabschaltung.

WHAT IS POP & BANG?

When you accelerate, your exhaust produces wonderful roaring sounds we are all used to. However, when you decelerate, the sound disappears with the speed. Pops and bangs make deceleration sound even better than acceleration.

As you lift your foot off the throttle, your exhaust starts popping, crackling and gurgling, which adds a whole lot of fun and character to driving segments that used to be devoid of any pleasure.

Similarly, if you have pops and bangs tuning file installed, when you shift gears, you will no longer experience a drop in sound when you shift up. You can mark each shift with a loud pop & bang.

And of course, what would a tuning be without a performance advantage. Aside from the sound benefit, pops and bangs additionally reduce or completely remove turbo lag after deceleration.

In addition to these amazing new features, pops and bangs can cause your engine and exhaust some serious problems you should be aware of, so make sure you work with tuners who put the spotlight on safety as much as performance. However, you should not be worried, since we have listed the major possible issues below and are here to make sure you avoid them any time!

POPS AND BANGS – HOW TO MAKE YOUR CAR SHOOT FLAMES?

Two things are necessary to create pops and bangs. First of all, we need to change the software in your ECU so that it does not cut off fuel immediately after you lift your foot off the throttle pedal. This means that some fuel is injected even when you are not pressing the pedal.

Secondly, we retard ignition timing during deceleration. The change causes the flame front to spread later than it normally would. This means that a part of combustion happens as the exhaust valves open and the cylinder is no longer the only location where the flame front spreads.

Many of you know how important timing is for both safety and performance. If ignition timing was delayed all the time, this would greatly diminish performance. This is why the delay is programmed to happen only when you lift your foot off the accelerator pedal. This way the pop & bang is present but it by no means reduces the performance abilities of your car. In fact, for turbocharged cars, it even improves them.

This improvement comes from the fact that fuel is not cut off during deceleration and the flame front spreads later. The result is a flow through the exhaust even while decelerating. This flow keeps the turbo spooling, so the next time you press the pedal you will not experience the all too familiar and hated turbo lag since the exhaust side of the turbo never stops spinning. This enables the compressor side to provide instant boost once the pedal is pressed again and the throttle valve opens to let the air into the engine.

Since this process eliminates the turbo lag, thus improving response and performance, pop and bang is also known as anti-lag system (ALS). And in our experience the better the response, the more satisfied the driver. Agree?

IS TURBO NECESSARY FOR POP AND BANG REMAP?

Turbo is not a requirement for pops and bangs, since the most important segments are the delays in ignition and fuel cutoff. The only difference between cars with and without turbo is that turbocharged cars will benefit from the anti-lag feature.

Moreover, pops and bangs can also occur when the car stands still. The mechanism is fairly similar, but the sounds are of noticeably lower intensity.

IS POPS AND BANGS TUNE SAFE?

If done properly, kept under control, well tested and not taken too far, pops and bangs are completely safe. In fact, many manufacturers offer pop and bang sounds as a stock feature for their cars and they come with regular warranty and safety claims. These include some of the most famous manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz (especially for AMG cars), BMW and VW and other VAG models. So, yes, pops and bangs, if done right, are completely safe. Otherwise, they would hardly find their place in regular production cars.

POP & BANG STAGES AND POSSIBILITIES

The amount of fuel and the level of ignition delay provide lots of space for customization of your pop and bang remap. However, there are a few things to consider if you seek a safe and smooth ride. In order to provide our customers with safety, but also allow some level of customization, we have created two stages of pop & bang tuning.
Most people who aim for custom pops and bangs require a more intensive sound. Going too far with the modifications can be very detrimental to the valves, exhaust and even turbo. Many stock parts are not designed to withstand extreme temperatures and pressures which are inevitably created during the most aggressive pops and bangs.

Stage 1 pop & bang offers moderate pop and bang levels. When we say ‘moderate’ it is important to say that they are by no means timid. They are more than sufficient to put smiles on the faces of most customers and stage 1 pop & bang also comes with other benefits. For example, in most vehicles, for stage 1 you don’t need any aftermarket parts or other hardware changes. The pops and bangs are designed to provide the amazing sound, but also ensure the safety of all parts including the most vulnerable ones such as catalyst.

However, some people want the extreme and for them we offer stage 2 pop & bang. The stage 2 actually includes a number of different upgrades which help us tailor your tuning according to what you want. The initial requirements for the stage 2 include an aftermarket or sports exhaust and exclusion of the stock catalytic converter. These stock parts are not of sufficient capability to deal with the severe pops and bangs, so they need to be removed.

We have mentioned the two core changes, other changes depend on what the customer desires. We have a dedicated team of experts who can perform all of the necessary calculations and tests and provide the best advice for each particular case. However, due to the varying requirements of our customers, the most hardcore alterations are done on their own responsibility.

CAN EXHAUST FLAMES DAMAGE YOUR CAR?

There are two ways pops and bangs can damage the vehicle. The first one is already mentioned in the stage 2 pop & bang part of the text. In this case, the damage can occur when pops and bangs are too extreme. However, well trained and experienced experts can prevent you from crossing the line of safety.

The second way pops and bangs can seriously damage your car regardless of level of modification is having it tuned by people who do not have the necessary knowledge, experience or equipment. Bear in mind that you modify the operation of your engine and put far more stress on some of the vehicle’s parts. Not controlling every part of the process can be detrimental even if you opt for lower intensity exhaust flames.

FAQ

What are some other names for pop and bang?

Pop and bang is also called deceleration map, crackle map, pop and crackle, anti-lag system, popcorn, exhaust crackle, pop on overrun, exhaust overrun, AK47 and in some countries schubblubbern or schubabschaltung. All of these terms refer to the same effect.

Does pop and bang affect performance?

On turbocharged vehicles, it does. As explained above, keeping the turbo spooled makes reaction time shorter and reduces or even eliminates turbo lag after deceleration. If your exhaust is popping and cracking, that means gases are flowing through it and they are keeping your turbo running.

Is pop and bang safe?

If done properly, kept under control, well tested and not taken too far, pops and bangs are completely safe. In fact, many manufacturers offer pop and bang sounds as a stock feature for their cars and they come with regular warranty and safety claims. These include some of the most famous manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz (especially for AMG cars), BMW and VW and other VAG models. So, yes, pops and bangs, if done right, are completely safe. Otherwise, they would hardly find their place in regular production cars.

Going too far can be detrimental to your valves, exhaust system and catalysts and in some cases even turbo. This is why a controlled pop and bang tune developed by experts is essential if you want to enjoy the awesome sounds and also keep the safety and reliability of your car.

Do I need to have turbo for pop and bang?

Turbo is not a requirement for pops and bangs, since the most important segments are the delays in ignition and fuel cutoff. The only difference between cars with and without turbo is that turbocharged cars will benefit from the anti-lag feature.

Moreover, pops and bangs can also occur when the car stands still. The mechanism is fairly similar, but the sounds are of noticeably lower intensity.

Do I have to change my downpipe for pop and bang?

This depends on a few conditions, including the stock setup, catalyst flow, OPF and how hard you want the pops.

Generally speaking, pop and bang can damage your catalysts which are usually located in the downpipe. The harder the pop and bang, the more chance for an issue. However, we also know that many stock cars with catalysts have pop and bang.

The reason for this and the answer to the question is that higher flow sports catalysts and controlled, safe pop and bang can be combined in some vehicles.

Of course, should the legal conditions for road cars in your country allow it, or if you are making a track car, catless downpipes are a safe bet for pop and bang on any car.

If you need help deciding on whether your car should have pop and bang installed, how hard you can go and if you need to change any stock parts, contact us and get the best guidance from experienced engineers.

Can I Turn Pop and Bang on and off?

Yes, you can, depending on the model. The most common setup is activating pop and bang only when the sport mode is engaged. It gives you the versatility of using your car as a daily driver with a more subdued sound for everyday conditions and also enjoying the extreme soundtrack when enjoying its performance.
